Recommended inoculations
As prevention against diseases such as:
- Hepatitis type A
- Influenza
- Tick-borne encephalitis
- Meningitis
Inoculations are recommended to offer long-term protection to your children.
Hepatitis
Hepatitis is an infection of the liver caused by several viruses. Depending on the type of virus, hepatitis is divided into a number of different types - A, B, C, D and E. Characteristic symptoms are a yellowing of the skin, the mucous membranes and the whites of the eyes, but they do not have to be apparent in every patient. The yellowing is thus only a manifestation of the disease and can also be a symptom of other diseases, not only hepatitis. More information is especially known about Hepatitis A and B, as they are most widespread and can be inoculated against.
Influenza
“The flu” is a highly contagious and quickly spreading viral infection. Each year, it affects hundreds of thousands of people of all age groups. The flu is a seasonal illness, it occurs most often in the winter and in the beginning of spring. The source of infection is the human being; contagion is via air-borne droplets. The virus enters the body through the nose and within two to three days the symptoms of the disease will appear, which are high-grade fever (100.4 F-104.0 F), chills, an aching head, muscles and joints and overall weakness. In older or chronically ill patients the flu can cause pneumonia, or affect the muscles of the heart or nervous system. Inoculations take place from September to November of each year; a specific new serum is devised for every season, as the continually changes. Inoculations have to be repeated every year.
Tick-borne encephalitis
Tick-borne encephalitis – a type of meningitis (inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord), encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), or meningoencephalitis (inflammation of both the brain and membranes) is caused by a virus which is carried by ticks. The illness can have a light course or be even without symptoms, but it can also be severe and lead to damage to the nervous system.
Infected ticks in Czech Republic can mainly be found in the basin of the Vltava and her tributaries Sázav and Berounka, around Opava, Bruntál, and Znojmo. In these areas, up to 5% of all ticks are infected.
The vaccination is intended for children older than 12 months and for adults. The basic inoculation consists of three doses, with the need to re-inoculate every three years with one dose.
Meningococcal meningitis
The disease is caused by several types of bacteria. Contagion is through air-borne droplets, and the disease is serious; its course is sometimes very fast. Inoculations exist against meningococcal meningitis A and C. There is currently no vaccination against type B. One dose of inoculation provides protection for up to three years. Inoculation is recommended for military recruits and for travelers into areas with high meningitis occurrence.
Whooping cough (Pertussis)
Since January 2003 parents who want to have their children inoculated against diphtheria, tetanus, whopping cough and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) with a modern, new generation vaccine, have the possibility to purchase for the inoculation of their children a combined vaccine with an acellular pertussis component. The incidence of side effects after the application of this vaccine has been significantly lower than with cellular vaccines which are generally applied. The inoculation schedule for both vaccines (cellular and acellular) is the same.
The modern combined vaccine with acellular components have been included in most general inoculations in the countries of the EU and the USA, including Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, but also in Poland and Slovinia. The world-wide trend is the usage of acellular vaccines, which are replacing cellular ones.
